Fort Knox Child, Youth & School Services: Our Mission is "Caring"
Welcome to the Fort Knox Family Child Care (FCC) program. Family Child Care is in-home certified care for children ages 4 weeks to 12 years that is provided by a family member in housing on and off the installation. Providers are private contractors who establish their own fees and operating hours. Quality care is provided in an enriched learning environment in a Family like setting.

Our developmental program is governed by Army Regulation 608-10, supported by the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC), and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) guidelines. Providers are certified as Multi-Age Homes that offer Full Day, Hourly, Part Day, Extended Hours, Overnight Care, and Special Needs Endorsement.
Although the providers are independent contractors, their homes are inspected frequently by Army proponents of Fire, Health and Safety and monitored by Family Child Care staff. Installation Fire, Health and Safety staff inspect homes prior to provider's provisional certification and annually thereafter.
Our professionally trained FCC Providers recognize each child's unique abilities to grasp knowledge. We provide each child with a safe and nurturing environment which promotes physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of young children while responding to the ever-changing needs of our families. We believe that children learn about their world through play and that learning should be active, multi-sensory, hands on, concrete and relevant. We encourage experimentation, free choice and problem solving.
Our homes are multi-age and reflect more of a family atmosphere. We consider our homes your child's "home away from home". Individualized care for each child and family is provided and we specialize in small group settings. In the family childcare home, children are included in daily age-appropriate household activities to teach children basic life skills. We provide a more flexible schedule for working parents who have unusual work schedules.
The Fort Knox FCC has a Parent Participation Plan in which parents may volunteer at the FCC office and earn a discount off their child care fees. Parents are encouraged to attend Parent and Youth Advisory Council (PYAC) that meets quarterly. Parents are also invited to attend any training that is offered through FCC.
The Fort Knox FCC offers a Family Child Care Subsidy Assistance Program to make FCC a more viable option for low- income families and to encourage professional development and quality care in FCC homes. The direct subsidies provide incentives for providers to offer fee equity, extended hours, long term care, infant/toddler care, training and support services, professional development, food reimbursement cost, and special needs child care. Indirect subsidies include resource library supplies and equipment, start-up kits, provider training during duty hours, Army Risk Management Program, recognition awards/activity events, professional development, and marketing support.
Several of our providers have earned their Child Development Associate (CDA); some providers are currently working toward their National Associate Family Child Care Accreditation (NAFCC).
The USDA Food Program Manager conducts an initial inspection prior to receipt of provisional certification and conducts quarterly inspections thereafter. The Training and Curriculum Specialist conducts "Creating the Family Child Care Home Environment" inspections prior to receipt of provisional certifications. The FCC Director and Army Community Service staff conducts a Child Abuse Risk Assessment Tool at the end of provisional certification and during the re-certification process (every three years). The FCC Director also conducts a FCC Home Checklist Basic Core Requirement Items within 30 days of a provider signing on their first day care child. The FCC Director conducts a quarterly inspection to check for safety, health, fire, paperwork, and etc. A Family Day Care Rating Scale (FDCRS) is conducted within nine months of providing care and annually thereafter. The Training and Curriculum Specialist and the FCC Director monitor developmental activities with the children monthly. Children are observed as requested. Also, the CYS Coordinator visits FCC homes monthly.
