The General George Patton Museum of Leadership - Free Admission - Open to the Public!
The Patton Museum was originally dedicated on May 30, 1949. It's goal was to preserve the history of Armor and Cavalry by keeping watch over historical materials and making exhibits available to soldiers, researchers, and the general public. The museum is one of the largest in the Army Museum System. The present museum was constructed by the Patton Museum Foundation without cost to the U.S. Government. Funding for construction was provided by donations from thousands of individuals and organizations from around the world.
Museum displays offered a vast assortment of equipment, weapons, and other types of memorabilia covering periods in time from 1550 BC when the Hyksos invaded Egypt and introduced the Egyptians to the chariot, to the present day and latest available weapons and equipment that the world has to offer.
Beginning on 7 September 2010, All but 17 of the Tanks and Cavalry displays were blocked from public view and have now been shipped to Fort Benning. They will be available again to the public in 2013 or 2014 at Fort Benning, Georgia. This transition may take as long as 18 months. As soon as an area has opened up the new director, curator, and their professional staff will begin putting in new displays and exhibits. Anything relating to General Patton will remain at Fort Knox and is available for viewing as indicated below. The museum is still open to the public and absolutely FREE.
Visitors come from all over the world to view the exhibits. Tour busses going to other places often arrive unannounced because the tour companies use the Patton Museum as one of their stops along their routes. Military reunions are often held at Fort Knox and most of the agendas allow for some time spent at the Patton Museum to take the proverbial "stroll down memory lane".
All visitors to the museum eventually end up in the Museum Gift Shop. The Gift Shop is a wonderful place to purchase a gift or a souvenir to remind you of your visit. If you're looking for a really unique gift for a family member or that special someone, the gift shop is the place to find it. Items in the gift shop run from 75 cents for a post card to $225.00 for a "Last of The German Kings" print featuring King Tiger tanks on the way to the Battle of the Bulge signed by the artist and four of the SS Tank Commanders who fought in the battle. Big sellers in the gift shop are the challenge coins, gold bar replicas, and extremely detailed preassembled models by
Forces of Valor. The gift shop carries only the enthusiast series of models and not the regular types found in the large chain stores. If Forces of Valor carries a model, you can be sure that the gift shop has it. For those who want to collect models, but don't have the time to build them, pre-assembled models from top of the line companies are the solution. With an inventory of thousands of items, we are sure to have what you want.
NOTE: The gift shop will be closed the last day of each month to conduct end-of-month inventories - if the last day of the month falls on a Sunday, the gift shop will close on Monday.
