Description: Army Family Team Building (AFTB) is not a new idea or concept. It’s the formal recognition and naming of something that the Army and Army families have been doing for over 200 years – sustaining and nurturing the force and saving the Nation.
Army Family Team Building is a serious business. It’s about READINESS…Mission Readiness AND Family Readiness. It’s about helping families adapt to Army life, accept challenges, deal with change, and develop life skills. Army Family Team Building has three separate tracks: one for soldiers (active and reserve component); one for Department of Army (DA) Civilians; and one for family members. AFTB is an all-volunteer led organization. For volunteer opportunities and class information, visit the official web site or our office. You can attend classes locally or online. Classes also offered in Korean and Spanish online.
It is the goal of the Army Family Team Building to inform our soldiers and families. AFTB will teach them that the more informed their spouse is about the military environment, the better their chances for a successful career. The better prepared the spouses are to handle the challenges of military living, the more the soldiers can concentrate on the mission. Often we forget that our civilian counterparts deploy with our soldiers. It is just as important that their families also have a basic understanding of the military. Army Family Team Building provides them that opportunity. In the past it was said, “The Army takes care of its own.” Today’s saying is more appropriately: “The Army takes care of its own by teaching its own to care of themselves.”
AFTB is organized into three levels and is taught through interactive classes. The training can also be done as a unit, squad, team, or FRG group. We can bring the program to you. If you are interested in attending classes, call the AFTB office at (502) 624-8300.
Level I (Army 101) is crucial for those who are new to the Army (0-5 years). It introduces them to the basic terms, acronyms, and resources that are needed in order for them to successfully transition into the Army lifestyle. The first level of AFTB includes topics such as: Military Acronyms & Terms, Customs & Courtesies, Community Resources, and Problem Solving.
Level II (Leadership Development) is geared toward those who are becoming involved in the Army Community and it also has specific training for FRG participants and leaders. Level II classes include: Team Dynamics, The Volunteer Experience, Family Readiness Groups and the Deployment Cycle, and Introduction to Leadership.
Level III (Professional Development) offers training to enhance an individual’s professional growth and leadership skills. This training is valuable to individuals who are leaders, whether it is in the unit, the FRG, or the community. The skills gained in Level III help to foster cohesive groups that become productive. Topics include: Leadership Styles, Coaching and Mentoring, Managing Group Conflict, and Building Cohesive Teams.
Instructor Training AFTB Instructor Training prepares Family members, Soldiers and Civilians to become an effective AFTB instructor. No prior teaching experience is necessary—AFTB Instructor Training will give you all the basic skills you need to be an AFTB Instructor. Instructor Training classes include: the Planning Process, Speaking on Your Feet, Methods of Instruction, and Instructional Aids.
